According to Thornburg (2008a) the Rhyme of History is basically when something new rekindles something from the past. This is generally true for most products on the market today, whether it involves technology, fashion or how we go about completing a task. We tend to learn from our mistakes and optimize future versions of the products or output when something is revised or redone in some way. This week when deciding on one particular technology that could be related to something from a far distant past I was hard pressed to choose just one, but then I thought of e-book readers and how they brought some allure back to reading again. The quote in the Walden resources tab this week is true for most people that states “The future will be like the past, only with cooler toys.” Many students do not enjoy reading because they are more interested in cooler toys like electronics and video games, so e-book readers may be a way to use a “cooler toy” to incorporate reading back into their lives. This may be true for adults that have gotten away from reading printed, bound books as well. So, I believe that e-books have helped and will continue to help rekindle bound books that have been around for centuries to help bring readers back around to idea of reading again.

Reading Again
ReplyDeleteI think that today's technologies has brought back a sense of enjoyment to many things including books. I think that the flexibility that the technologies bring is what makes it so exciting again. However if authors do not catch up with the new approach to reading society will stop reading again.
I say this because when audio books came about I saw a slight increase in individuals enjoying books again but it slowly faded. I think this may happen again if authors do not provide their content in the electronic format.

ReplyDeleteYour choice of e-books is one that I had thought about choosing. E-book readers do bring enjoyment to reading books for many people in today’s society. E-books readers are available in several forms. The first versions of electronic books readers offered text in a black and white mode similar to the Nook. The iPad offers color options with the use of the e-book function. Your topic selection does show how history repeats itself with an old pastime being rekindled.
