Second Life can be considered disruptive because it allows people to become detached from the real world and from real life contacts and emotions. People can create avatars to represent themselves on Second Life and to an extent portray a side of themselves that may not be so realistic of their true lives. What’s worse is that people’s manners and behavior have already started to suffer in recent years, so by using Second Life, this decreases their opportunity for “true” physical contact with others, possibly worsening their behavior when they do encounter others. For teachers, we encounter various personalities and therefore we must learn to deal with a multitude of behaviors. The only way to do this is to be exposed to these personalities often by being in person. When we struggle with certain personalities, then we can learn from watching how others handle these personalities. However, this cannot be done virtually through platforms such as Second Life. Nothing can replace good old-fashioned observations in certain cases.
